Our relationships, whether in business, family, intimate or casual passing encounters, allow us to see aspects of ourselves that we may never encounter in any other setting. Often we are blind to these until they are mirrored back to us either as reflections or reactions. Relationships can be great and even when they are not, they can be immeasurably valuable. To the degree that we are open to that form of feedback, relationships can be catalysts for immense growth. Humans are wired for connection yet fear the vulnerability of intimacy. We crave love and belonging yet feel stifled and maybe resentful if we feel our self-expression is constrained. Consciously engaging in relationship can be transformative. Some powerful advice from Toni Morrison, “[If] you wanna fly, you got to give up the shit that weighs you down.”
